expedition overview
-
The journey begins in Reykjavík and continues towards North Iceland and the Highlands, moving between volcanic terrain, waterfalls, mountain landscapes and remote environments.
Locations are selected according to weather, light and road conditions. This gives us the flexibility to adjust the route, return to locations and spend more time working with the strongest photographic opportunities.
Early September brings changing colour, softer light and darker nights. When skies are clear and aurora activity is present, we will use the opportunity to photograph the northern lights.
Highland access cannot be guaranteed. Routes may change in response to official road closures, weather or safety considerations.
-
The workshop is limited to six photographers, giving every participant time, space and individual support in the field.
The small group allows us to move efficiently between locations, respond to changing conditions and spend more time developing compositions.
Guidance will be adapted to individual experience and photographic goals. You do not need to be an advanced photographer, but you should understand the basic operation of your camera.
-
This workshop focuses on developing a stronger and more intentional approach to landscape photography.
We will cover composition, working with natural light, long exposure techniques, ND filters, focus bracketing and image stacking. You will also learn how to assess a location, respond to changing conditions and develop different compositions from the same landscape.
When conditions allow, we will cover northern lights photography, including focusing at night, exposure settings and composing the aurora within the surrounding landscape.
Editing guidance will help you refine your photographs and develop finished, portfolio ready images.
-
This is not a fixed itinerary workshop. The route and daily schedule remain flexible so we can respond to weather, light, access and photographic potential.
Highland environments require careful planning. Road conditions can change quickly, particularly during September, and some routes may close with little notice.
Thor Excursions will monitor conditions and access throughout the workshop. If a planned route becomes unavailable, alternative locations will be selected to provide the strongest safe photographic opportunities.
The flexibility of the expedition allows us to work with Iceland rather than follow a schedule that may no longer suit the conditions.
-
The workshop is led by Diana Firląg and operated in partnership with Thor Excursions, a local Icelandic tour operator.
Thor Excursions manages transport, Highland access, route planning and local safety. Diana leads the photography tuition, composition guidance and editing support.
